Look, legal work doesn't have to feel like pulling teeth. We built Polyformative because we got tired of watching businesses struggle with outdated legal advice that couldn't keep up with how fast tech moves. We're here to actually understand what you're building and help you protect it without the stuffiness.
It's been quite a ride, honestly
Started in a cramped co-working space with three lawyers, too much coffee, and a shared frustration with how legal services were being delivered to tech companies. We knew there had to be a better way.
Expanded to 15 team members and moved into our Bay Street office. We'd built a reputation for actually understanding tech - not just pretending to. Our client roster grew from startups to established companies navigating complex IP issues.
Named one of Toronto's fastest-growing legal firms. We helped facilitate over 40 M&A transactions and protected countless innovations. Also launched our privacy practice right when PIPEDA compliance became everyone's nightmare.
We're now a team of 28 dedicated professionals serving clients across North America. Still in Toronto, still focused on making complex legal stuff make sense, and still drinking way too much coffee.
"I spent 10 years at big firms watching brilliant founders get buried in legal jargon. That's not how it should work. Law should enable business, not slow it down."
Before starting Polyformative, I cut my teeth at two of Bay Street's biggest firms. Great learning experience, sure, but I kept seeing the same problem - lawyers talking at clients instead of with them.
I graduated from Osgoode Hall in 2009, right into the recession. Watched a lot of promising companies fold because they couldn't afford proper legal counsel or got bad advice from people who didn't understand their business model.
So yeah, that's why we're here. To be the legal team you'd actually want to grab a beer with - who also happens to know their stuff when it comes to protecting your business.
I'm the tech nerd who went to law school. Worked as a software engineer for five years before realizing I was more interested in the contracts and IP issues than the actual coding.
That background's been invaluable, honestly. When a client's explaining their SaaS architecture or blockchain implementation, I actually get it. No translation needed.
Met Sarah at a legal tech conference where we both were complaining about the same things over drinks. Six months later, we'd drafted our partnership agreement - which, yeah, we rewrote about five times because we're perfectionist lawyers like that.
"Being a lawyer who's actually written production code? That's my superpower. I've been on both sides of the table."
Not just fancy words on our website - these guide how we work
We don't hide behind legal jargon. If you can't understand what we're saying, we're not doing our job right. Your contracts should make sense to you, not just to other lawyers.
Business doesn't wait for lawyers to get around to things. We respond fast, turn documents around quickly, and understand that sometimes "good enough today" beats "perfect next month."
Legal advice should help you reach your goals, not become the goal itself. We always ask "what's the business outcome you're after?" before diving into the legal weeds.
We're upfront about costs, timelines, and potential issues. You'll always know what you're paying for and why. No mysterious bills showing up months later for "research and review."
We're not here for one-off transactions. Our best work happens when we understand your business deeply - and yeah, we'll remember your kid's name and ask how the product launch went.
Tech and law both move fast. We're constantly learning - whether it's new privacy regulations, emerging tech like AI and Web3, or changes in corporate governance best practices.
We're on the 12th floor at 181 Bay Street - right in the heart of Toronto's financial district. Big windows, good coffee, and a conference room that doesn't feel like a corporate dungeon.
